The Australian Government's Energy Efficient Homes Package is a $3.9 billion package to improve the energy rating of Australian homes.  Under this program the Australian Government is offering:

• free ceiling insulation worth up to $1,200 to all Australian home owner-occupiers with limited or no ceiling insulation
  
  OR a $1,600 rebate on the costs of installing a solar hot water system
  
  
• help for renters, with a rebate for landlords and tenants on the costs of insulating rental properties.

Solar Hot Water Rebate Program

Australian Federal Government Rebates of $1600 are available to install solar hot water systems and $1,000 to install heat pump hot water systems to replace electric storage hot water systems in homes and rental properties.

The rebate is offered for systems installed on or after 3 February 2009.

Water heating is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions from the average Australian home, accounting for around 28% of home energy use (excluding the family car).

A Solar Hot Water System can save a family $300 to $700 off electricity bills each year.

Eligible systems

To be eligible for the rebate, a hot water system must:

• replace an electric storage hot water system
• be purchased and installed on, or after 3 February 2009
• be a solar or heat pump hot water system that is eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) at the time and place of installation
• be installed by a suitably qualified person (for example an electrician or plumber).

Eligible households

• An owner-occupier, landlord or tenant can apply for the rebate as long as the dwelling where the hot water system is installed is a principal place of residence.
• Government organisations are not eligible for the rebate.
