The Will and The Way
The Will and the Way is the name given to the guiding principles under which the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources operates.
It has two aspects: the Way, which is about what we do; and the Will, which is about how we do it.
The Way
The purpose of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources is twofold:
- to support the existing commercial and social structure; and
- to facilitate new development that will enable Tasmania to prosper.
In pursuing this purpose we are aiming to ensure the effective integration of the key infrastructure serving the community. This comprises our physical transport and energy assets (for example roads, bridges, ports and powerlines), our information systems capturing, maintaining and providing data (for example in transport, mining and forestry) and the policy environment and regulatory systems in which business is conducted.
The Will
How we achieve our purpose is as important as achieving it. We will:
- Ensure our end users’ and stakeholders’ needs are identified and fully taken into account in our decision making
- Collaborate and negotiate with end users and stakeholders to achieve quality outcomes
- Consult with colleagues from all areas of the department both to draw on the diversity of skills and experience and to bring about integrated outcomes
- Be innovative and willing to take sensible risks.
DIER Values
The Will And The Way is DIER’s charter for providing leadership in its areas of responsibility. It is underpinned by some basic values we embrace in the way we work.
Integrity - We are honest, fair and equitable in our dealings. We are reliable, consistent and objective.
We demonstrate this by ensuring other people's needs are fully taken into account in our decision making. We are responsible and accountable for our actions.
Respect - We recognise the right of people to hold a view and to have it heard and considered.
We listen to and consider the views of others. We will strive to understand their perspective. We will work with them to find innovative solutions.
Openness - We seek and encourage diverse views and, having regard to our obligation to confidentiality and the law, will share information and our views in a timely manner.
Other key attributes are important:
Teamwork - cooperative and collaborative work will result in higher quality outcomes.
Effective communication - clear relevant and informative two-way communication is central to the realisation of our goals.
Professionalism - developing and fully applying our technical and interpersonal skills to achieve the highest standards of performance.
